Throwback Thursday: Let’s go fly a plane!

Yep. I said it.

On Sunday, August 20, 2017 when Adam decided to go “practice flying” I said, “Yea. Sure I’ll go.”

I’m not sure who was more surprised by my answer, Adam or myself. He had only been asking me to fly with him AND his instructor for 6 months and never did I have any interests in dying. I mean flying with them! Much less going up alone with Adam just days after him getting his pilot’s license.

What in the world was I thinking? Maybe I was just being a supportive wife or crazy! I guess I’ll never know for sure, but on that warm August morning I decided to go up, up and away with my newly winged Pilot. I’ll share how we celebrated his big accomplishment in posts to come, but figured for our first Throwback Thursday of 2018 and (hopefully) days from getting our plane, it would be fun to tell our first flight story.

Adam spent weeks prepping for the exam y’all. If you know him, you know that when he has a goal, he is going to reach it and not only reach it, but do it with flying colors. He will be the best. He will do it the fastest and getting his license to fly was no exception. As thrilled as I was for him for completing his goal, it was not an easy 6 months for us. He would wake up super early. Go fly. Go to work. Stay late at work. Go night fly. Come home. Eat. Sleep. Repeat. I basically never saw the man. We had plenty of conversations about him and the “other woman” he was obsessed with for months. Plenty.

August 20th was the first day I returned home from a trip down to Orlando. (Adam shipped me off to Disney World so he could study for the exam.) As I walked in the door, he was leaving to go on his first solo flight since earning his wings. JUST LIKE THAT I said, “Ok, I’ll go too!” It was a now or never thing. If we didn’t walk out the door that very moment, there was no way I was going up anytime soon.

Next thing I know I am in the passenger seat of a little Cesnna plane watching my Pilot do his pre-flight checks and texting my bother to let him know we were about to take flight, in the event anything happened. There was no way I was telling my parents until we landed safely back on the ground.

Needless to say my stomach was in knots. I said about one hundred Hail Mary’s and had white knuckles during take off. (Oh, lets be honest. I had white knuckles during the entire flight and landing!)

While I was never fully comfortable during the flight thanks to my nerves, it was actually fun. Seeing the city from above is pretty amazing. We flew around North Atlanta, over Stone Mountain and Lake Lanier for about an hour. Baby steps y’all, baby steps.

I guess I should let you know Adam did a fantastic job flying! He was such a gentleman constantly checking on me, telling me what each of the knobs on the panel and exactly what their functions were. We even chatted about me, yes ME, taking a few classes just so I can learn the basics and more importantly learn how to land in the event of an emergency. We both think it will help my nerves and allow me to calm down and actually enjoy flying in our little bird.

I am still not thrilled with the idea of Adam flying and us traveling in a tiny little plane, but I am warming up to it. Adam got me my own fancy airplane headphones and the cutest miniature suitcase for weekend trips in Elsa for Christmas. It is the cutest thing ever y’all! (Watch my Instagram for a picture! You’ll love the suitcase, trust me!)

Just from writing this Throwback post, I am already getting butterflies thinking about going up again. After 4+ months of being in service, our little plane, Elsa, should be finished next week! Looks like we will soon be flying the friendly skies together and 2018 will be full of adventures!

Throwback Thursday: Charleston Overnight

Vacations come and go. As fun as it is to go, see and do, it is always nice to come home and sleep in your own bed. Now, we throwback. Reminisce on our travels, sort through pictures and start planning our next get-a-way.

July was a full month of traveling for your favorite Newly Newlyweds. Together we conquered Myrtle Beach, Orlando, New York and a quick overnight stay in Charleston, South Carolina. One of our favorite cities y’all!

While we were only there for a night, Adam and I made sure to make the most of our time. Charleston is less than a 5 hour drive from Atlanta and got there just in time for HAPPY HOUR!

We checked into our hotel, the beautiful Belmond Charleston Place. It is stunning y’all! Right off of Market Street – within walking distance to all of our favorite spots! {Not to mention it is attached to a shopping mall…poor Adam.}

After checking into the hotel we were off to hit HAPPY HOUR! First Stop? Amen Street Fish & Rawbar.  This was a favorite spot of ours from our last trip to Charleston and they have a fantastic HAPPY HOUR Menu!

From Amen Street we popped over to High Cotton Charleston– a new spot for us. They have a great bar/lounge area with live music. They don’t have a Happy Hour Menu. We stopped in for a cocktail and their Truffle Popcorn- OMG y’all….I could eat it everyday!

From Cocktails and Popcorn at High Cotton we moved to Poogan’s Smokehouse. New to the Charleston Food Scene and for those of you that love their sister restaurant, Poogan’s Porch, you’re sure to love this spot too!

We shared their “Southern Sangria” and snacked on their Pimiento Cheese Fritters with Tomato Jam…oh y’all. They are a MUST when you visit..melt in your mouth, ooey goodness. Craving them now!

Next on our list to see was 5 Church Street. We are not quite sure on the story of the restaurant, but being that Charleston is known as the “City of Churches” we would not be surprised if this newer spot was once a church.

The ambiance was unlike any other, however the service and variety offered was subpar. We sipped on an {overpriced} cocktail and hopped to our final spot of the night.

The Watch sits on the top of The Restoration Hotel in Charleston. It has some of the best views of the city and the BEST service we experienced during our stay.

We had one last cocktail, shared their  Lobster Mac & Cheese and Hushpuppies with house pimento cheese & pepper jelly. Oh y’all. Heaven on a plate. The Mac & Cheese had just the right amount of gooey cheese, pasta and fresh lobster pieces. We will definitely be back!

Are you stuffed? We are just thinking about our night in Charleston and can’t wait to plan our next visit! Throwbacks are so much fun thinking about how much enjoyed out short time in Charleston! We packed our bags, hopped in the car and drove onto Myrtle Beach where we met up with our friends David and Ann Marie. Stay tuned to our Tuesday Travels and see what we got into there!

Throwback Thursday: Not even newlyweds take on New York

Are we just dating? Are we “together”? Did Adam or I know each other’s middle names, favorite colors or board games as a child? All questions we might not of known the answers to when we took our first BIG trip together.

As Adam and I prepare to take-off on our next adventure to the BIG APPLE I couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate than a Throwback Thursday post about our first trip together.

We began dating in 2012… do you know our story? We were set up on a blind date by a coworker of Adam’s and the Mother of the family I was nannying for at the time. Long story short-ish….Adrienne spent months trying to set us up. We finally gave in and I, yes you read that correctly, I (Holly) got the nerve to call him on fall football Saturday afternoon. {After a TCU victory of course!}

We spent a couple of weeks texting regularly, chatting daily and agreed to not look each other up on Social Media or send photos of one another.  If/when we decided to meet it would truly be a “blind date.” We tackled all the touchy subjects before our first date. Yes…kids, religion, politics…we covered it all.

Two weeks after our first date was Christmas and my birthday…poor Adam.

As a {one time only} joint gift he surprised me with a trip to NYC and so comes our Throwback Thursday post!

We flew into LGA on a brisk January 4th afternoon.

As this was Adam’s first time to the Big Apple I played the part of tour guide. Our hotel was just a few blocks from Times Square. Shortly after landing and settling into out hotel we put on our walking shoes and started acting like tourists! We saw the lights of Times Square, the Toys R Us, Hershey and Lego Store. Strolled by Radio City Music Hall, the Rockefeller Ice Rink and Christmas Tree, where we took our first photo together after Adam got conned into buying a FDNY Beanie from a street vendor. {That’s a story for another post.}

That night Adam took me to see The Newsies on Broadway…it was fantastic! His first Broadway show was a success! {Little did he know how much I love the theater and how many times he would be going to the Fox Theatre from there on out.} If you get a chance to see it live, do it! If not, watch the movie!

Our second day in the city was spent roaming around like locals. Trying hole-in-the-wall restaurants, getting off the train on random spots, and doing a little shopping.

That night we grabbed some Starbucks and went on a Horse-and-Carriage ride through Central Park. Not to get all mushy, but it was oh-so romantic.

Our final day in the city was spent strolling through Central Park where I snapped one of my favorite photos of us. Until today, Adam didn’t know this photo existed. New York may not be known as “The City of Love,” but it will always be that to me. A magical city where my heart made room for Adam and a true love began to develop…oh lordy! Who am I being all sappy?

Friday Favorite: VINO Edition

Well, as you may or may not of heard, yesterday was apparently National Drink Wine Day. Hello? Could you have a better reason for a celebration? Especially on a Thursday!

Our weekly Friday Favorite could not have come at a better time. During our engagement Adam and I had such a fun time turning nights of registering into Date Nights. The first place we went to register was Pottery Barn. They offer items that work with all of your guest’s budgets- and have a fantastic policy for Newly Newlyweds!

The very first item we put on our register was this super, fancy-dancy, wine opener. I mean, we jokingly put it on the registry because we loved it and said to ourselves, “We will never get it, but lets just do it anyways! Ha! Ha!” Well low and behold if we didn’t get it and the story of how we got it is even better!

The June before our wedding my Mom, Dad and I took a little Road Trip to the GREAT State of Texas to visit my Aunt Tina. She had just had her kitchen redone and a fire pit build in her back yard, so of course we had to go see it in person! A trip to the GREAT State just wouldn’t be the same without a gathering with Aunt Tina’s oh-so-fun friends! What better reason to have a party than having family in town and a newly renovated kitchen? Almost as good of a reason as National Wine Drinking Day! Aunt Tina has some of the MOST fun friends! Everytime we plan a visit to Texas seeing her “family” is a must!

Mom and I spent the day helping Aunt Tina pick up the house and making fun appetizers before her friends arrived. I was (of course) the last to finish getting ready. Once ready I was told to go outside with my Dad and all the husbands…I knew something was up! Much to my surprise Aunt Tina, Mom, all her girl-friends and my cousin, Ashley, came outside wearing crowns and ringing wedding bells! They had planned the whole night for ME and Adam! I was so surprised and didn’t know if I should laugh or cry! A surprise wedding shower and one of my favorites! Each friend brought their favorite bottle of wine and one of their favorite recipes so Adam and I could start our life together with a stocked wine fridge and plenty of recipes! Smart ladies!

After all the hugs and laughter Aunt Tina brought out another surprise! A rather heavy wrapped box. Everyone was asking, “Do you know what it is? Do you have any guesses?” Umm no y’all…I am pretty shocked at the moment!

I opened it up and much to my surprise it was the Fancy-Dancy Wine Opener!

Oh-my-gosh y’all! I am still so excited about it! I wish I had pictures of my face! Talk about surprised! I immediately facetimed with Adam to tell him about the surprise party and show him our gift. He was just as surprised and grateful as I was.

It now proudly sits on our bar, in our living room at Casa de Fett. It’s quite the conversation piece and I have to say we do use it often! How? I am not quite sure…it’s so fancy I am scared I am going to break it. Adam is the Official Wine Opener.

We can’t thank each of your Texas Babes enough  for our wonderful gift ! We absolutely love it and all of you! We’re so thankful to have each of you in our lives and my Aunt Tina is lucky to have you as “sister-friends!”

Our Story: Every Little Detail

I’ve loved spending the last few Throwback Thursdays with y’all reliving our October wedding. Adam and I can’t get over the response we’ve recieved from friends and followers. We’re overjoyed with how much y’all have enjoyed our story.

We’ve shared just how personalized our day was, but we wanted to use this Throwback Thursday for those that are planning- maybe give you a new idea or inspiration from all the little details we had to make our wedding ours.

7-23 blog 2Before the ceremony, we welcomed guests with our wedding book and a photo of us from when Adam proposed on Christmas Eve on top an old whiskey barrel table Adam’s dad made for us. One of my dear family friends and one of my Small Group girls with an over the top bubbly personality, greeted our friends and family.

We asked that our friends and family not pick a side to sit on as most of the guest were from the Peachtree City area. Big thanks to whoever ended up doing all the chalk writing!

“As Two families become one, please pick a seat not a side.”

The boys waited for us at our hand-made rustic alter. An antique window hung about bushels of hay covered with baskets of fall flowers. While the ladies of our Bridal Party, my Dad and I walked under our rustic entrance made of antique doors and burlap. (Big thanks to all my “dads” for helping to secure the alter and entrance. We had a beautiful and windy October evening wedding.)

The isle was lined with tin buckets decorated with burlap, lace and pearls by my Aunt Tina and Friends filled with big bunches of Baby’s Breath.

After we said “I do,” guests relaxed in simple seatting areas and played Corn-hole on our Michigan and ZTA custom made sets while the Bridal Party took photos. (Thanks Ryan, Mie, Melissa and Ashley! We LOVE them!) Guests snacked on Southern Chick-fil-A Biscuits with all the fixins’ of an assortment of jellies, meats and cheeses. (Didn’t my “Moms” make the spread look darling?)

Our guests drank out of handled Mason Jar Mugs with a chalk stripe to help them keep track of their drinks. Lights lined wooden ladders where the mugs sat for guests to use.

7-23 blog 77-23 blog 87-23 blog 9 Adam made two bars for our reception, both made out of pallet wood with galvanized metal tops. He installed two keg taps on the “large” bar and just served wine and cocktails on the smaller bar.

We served Texas BBQ from our local Peachtree City Dickie’s BBQ- it was so delicious and they were fantastic to work with. We used barrels of hay and antique doors as tables to place the food on. One of my lovely “Moms” chalked on old window panes the menu for the evening. Silverware was wrapped together (thank you Dickies) with navy napkins and placed in a metal basket at the end of the table. We made “stripy things” using various laces, tulle, burlap and white Christmas lights to serve as a backdrop for the food tables. Thanks to all the “Moms” that helped make our day so special! The “Stripy things” looked great in the hanger when the sun set.

We used matching beverage servers for Tea and Water that sat ontop of another table Adam made using pallet wood.

Adam and I sat at a Sweet heart table draped with a burlap table cloth. Behind us was the backdrop of Wedding Cake sitting ontop of an old whiskey barrel between two Antique doors. Each door hung a sign for the “Bride” and “Groom.” We had a personalized pillows at our seats- “Hey Y’all”  and “Michigan” and drank out of “Mr.” and “Mrs.” Mason Jar Mugs all night.

Darin, Adam’s Best Man; My Aunt Tina and Maid of Honor and My dad all toasted to Adam and I. We clanked glasses with personalized champagne flutes from our dear family friends, The Stewart Family.

One very special part of our day, was a simple little table, remembering our Grandparents. Both our Mom’s parents are no longer with us. Our Wedding Day would have been a day they would have loved to be a part of. I don’t know about Adam’s grandparents, but mine would have been on the dance floor with a beverage in hand! Adam and I wanted a simple and special way to remember them at our day. Adam’s Mom made a burlap and lace table runner and wrote on an antique mirror to go alongside their wedding pictures.

We shared all about our delicious Cherry On Top Delights cakes in our previous Wedding posts, but of course we would have a Groom’s Cake to look like Michigan’s “Big House.” We shared our wedding day with my brother’s birthday and made a point to have the band help sing him happy birthday.

Adam and I waved “goodbye” to all of our friends and family from the helicopter as we headed towards Atlanta for the night. We asked each of our guests to take a Jar of Jelly as their gift.

Our day, like yours, was uniquely ours and perfect. Every little detail was “us.” We cheered on The Frogs and sang to the Maze and Blue. We sipped out of Mason Jars and danced the night away. It was perfect and both Adam and I have loved sharing our moment with y’all.

Monday’s Menu: Party Dips

Remember our post a few weeks ago about Adam’s Surprise 30th Birthday Party? Well as promised, I have a few of our favorite appetizer recipes to share! These “dips” have been a hit with our friends and family and I’m sure will be at your next gathering as well!

Dirty 30d

Southwestern Corn Dip is a super easy, tasty, warm dip I got from my Mom. It is best served with Tositio Scoops.

Ingredients:

  • 1 15-ounce can yellow corn kernels
  • 1 2 1/4-ounce can sliced black olives
  • 1 4-ounce can chopped green chilies
  • 1 medium fresh jalapeño pepper (for about 2 tablespoons chopped)
  • 2 jarred roasted red peppers, optional
  • 1 cup shredded Monterey Jack or Colby- Jack cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup mayonnaise
  • Cooking oil spray
  • Tortilla chips, for serving

Preheat the oven to 350 F.

Drain the corn, olives, and green chilies. (You can pour them all into the same colander to drain.) Place the drained vegetables in a medium-size mixing bowl.

Cut the jalapeno pepper in half, and remove the ribs and seeds. Finely chop the pepper, and add it to the bowl. If using the roasted peppers, finely dice them and add them to the bowl. Add both cheeses and the mayonnaise. Stir well.

Spray a 2-quart baking dish lightly with cooking oil spray. Place the dip into the dish, and smooth the top. Bake until the top is bubbly, about 30 minutes. Remove from the oven and serve warm with tortilla chips.

The Great State of Texas Caviar is one of Adam’s all time favorite snacks. He was introduced to it from a coworker and is also best served with Tostito Scoops. It is the healthiest appetizer out of the 3.

Serve with chips.

(Note* Of course I had to add in “GREAT State” to the Texas Caviar name.)
Ingredients:
  • 2 (15 ounce) cans black beans, rinsed and drained
  • 2 (15 ounce) cans pinto beans, rinsed and drained
  • 2 (15 ounce) cans white corn, rinsed and drained
  • 1 (4 ounce) can chopped green chiles, undrained
  • 1 jalapeno chile pepper, seeded and finely chopped (optional)
  • 1 red bell pepper – cored, seeded and finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper – cored, seeded and finely chopped
  • 1 small red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 bunch cilantro leaves, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup rice vinegar
  • 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1/3 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Mix the black beans, pinto beans, white corn, green chiles, jalapeno pepper, red and green bell peppers, red onion, and cilantro together in a large bowl.

To make the dressing, stir the rice vinegar, olive oil, sugar, and garlic powder together in a pan. Bring to a boil, then remove from heat, and cool. Pour dressing over bean mixture, and toss to mix evenly.

I prefer to let the mixture sit in the refrigerator for a few hours prior to serving. It is much better as it sits, but is not necessary.

Serve with chips.

The Pig Skin Cheese Ball is oh-so-yummy! I mean tell me something that isn’t good that has bacon in it’s name? My Aunt Tina gave me this recipe and it’s a huge hit for the guys! A cheese ball smothered in bacon and served with Ritz Crackers….in the wording of Rachael Ray “yum-o!”

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 lbs sliced bacon
  • 1 medium jalapeño, cored, seeded and finely chopped (if you want extra heat keep the seeds)
  • 16oz soften cream cheese
  • 1 cup shredded, sharp white cheddar cheese, plus 1tbsp for decorating
  • 1 tbsp of chopped scallions
  • Crackers for serving

Preheat oven to 400*  Lay bacon in a single layer on a cookie sheet. Bake in oven 15-20 minutes until crispy. Drain bacon on paper towel and let cool. Reserve 2 tbsp of bacon grease. Once bacon has cooled, coarsely chop and set aside.

Cook the jalapeño in the reserved bacon grease over medium heat, until soft. Using a stand mixer (I have a Kitchen-aid) mix together 1 cup of chopped bacon, sautéed jalapeño, cream cheese, 1 cup of shredded cheese and the scallions until well combined. Form mixture into a ball and cover with plastic wrap; refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.

Before serving, form ball into an oblong football shape and roll in the remaining chopped bacon to coat. Decorate the top of the football cheese ball with the remaining cheddar to resemble laces.

Serve with crackers.

Our Story: The Ceremony & The Music

Adam and I have received multiple messages from followers wanting more details about our October 2014 Wedding, so why not do a little Throwback Thursday  and relive our big day by sharing the sounds of our ceremony.

Everything was perfect. Beyond any expectation I had and more than I could ever imagine. Our wedding was us. We tried to make it as personalized as we could- from the venue to the food – every little detail was a piece of each of us.

If you’ve not seen our previous wedding posts, Adam and I said “I Do” at an airport hanger in Peachtree City, GA. Guests had a view of the runway and the beautiful sunset behind our rustic alter. While guests arrived we had a few tunes playing in the background. I can’t remember all that we had on loop and who knows where the iPod, but here’s a little sampling!

Joey, my younger Brother helped to seat our Mom, while Adam escorted his parents to their seats. As the rest of our family was seated and our Bridal Party arrived “Bella’s Lullaby” by Carter Burwell was playing in the background.

One of my favorite parts of our wedding was walking down the isle. As a young girl it is something you think about all the time. How you’ll walk, what you will wear, will you cry or not. Once my Dad and I made it to the double antique doors draped in burlap my nerves really kicked in. I heard the crowd shuffling to stand up, which my Mom will forever say they stood up too early- she had strict instructions to stand at the 10 second mark.

I don’t remember much about the ceremony from that point on, but I remember looking up at my Dad, smiling at him, squeezing his arm and fighting to hold back tears. I looked over to my right-hand lady, Melissa and said, “Let’s go.”

“You Sure?” Melissa questioned.

“Yes.” I answered

Before my forever planned Grand Entrance to “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri could happen, Dad and I walked out together, towards Adam.

It was all I could do to hold back my tears. I couldn’t look at anyone in the crowd, especially my Mom and Aunt Tina- I simply focused on Adam.

Thankfully I met him with just being a little teary eyed. Something we both had in common. I am tearing up sharing it with you now. It was simply perfect.

I’m so glad we chose an untraditional song to walk down the isle to. Now, each time I hear “A Thousand Years” tears start flowing. I relive that moment, our moment once again. The butterflies come back and I can’t help but smile.
